System Design: Track F
Resources
Sixteen verified blogs, books and courses for system design, grouped by level and by cost.
Every link here was checked in October 2026. Start with the free SDE-1 list and add one paid thing only if a loop is close. The case studies are what you practise on; these are what you read between attempts.
The order that works
Read one resource, then draw one design. Reading three resources in a row feels productive and changes nothing. The ratio is one to one.
SDE-1 core
- The System Design Primer: free, and the widest free map of the field. Read the index in week 20, then use single sections as revision.
- Hello Interview: system design in a hurry: free written track built for a short runway. Use it in weeks 20 to 22 to learn the interview format itself.
- ByteByteGo: paid, with the clearest diagrams in the field. The newsletter is free; subscribe now and pay only when a loop is close.
- ByteByteGo: System Design Interview course: paid, and it is Alex Xu's book with motion. Watch one chapter per case study in weeks 21 to 26.
- Gaurav Sen: free videos that build intuition for scaling, queues and consistency. Use it in weeks 20 to 24 when a topic will not click from text.
- Designing Data-Intensive Applications: the paid book everyone names. Read chapters 1 to 3 after week 26 and keep the rest for SDE-2.
SDE-2 depth
- Arpit Bhayani's blog: free long essays on database and distributed systems internals. Read one a week from week 27 and tie it to a design you drew.
- High Scalability: free archive of real architectures and what broke in them. Skim one post before a case study for vocabulary and numbers.
- Martin Fowler: free reference for the patterns you name in answers, such as CQRS and event sourcing. Look up one pattern; do not read it end to end.
- AWS Architecture Center: free reference architectures with tradeoffs written down. Open it when your design needs a concrete component choice.
- Netflix Tech Blog: free writeups on streaming, caching and resilience at real scale. Read after week 29 for depth on feeds and content delivery.
- Uber Engineering: free posts on geospatial indexing and high-volume data pipelines. Read the geospatial ones before the Tinder-style feed in week 28.
- Stripe Dot Dev Blog: free posts on payments, API design and idempotency. Read it alongside the payments ledger in week 21.
- Cloudflare Blog: free posts on DNS, caching, rate limiting and outages. Read one outage postmortem before week 22.
India-context
- InterviewReady: paid, Gaurav Sen's course, with the first four videos of each course free. Try those free videos in week 22 before paying for anything.
- Arpit Bhayani: the System Design Masterclass: paid cohort aimed at SDE-2 and above. It is explicitly not SDE-1 prep, so put it after the offer.
Free vs paid
You do not need to spend money to pass an SDE-1 system design round. Spend only when a specific weakness is already visible in your mock feedback.
| Budget | Use | Skip for now |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing | The Primer, Hello Interview, Gaurav Sen, Arpit's blog, the engineering blogs | Nothing. This list is enough for SDE-1. |
| One month of a paid course | ByteByteGo, timed to your first real loops | Do not stack two paid courses at once. |
| After the offer | Arpit's masterclass, DDIA cover to cover | Both are wasted effort before week 26. |
Common mistakes
- Read one resource against one design you have already drawn.
- Prefer written posts over videos when you are short on time.
- Keep a single notes file with the diagram you redrew.
- Re-read your own notes before a mock, not a new blog.
