SDE-1 All-In Guide

Compare an offer carefully

A checklist for comparing compensation, role scope, start dates, and employment terms.

Use this page to compare written offers against your needs. Compensation structures vary by company, so ask for the full breakdown and take time to understand the terms before you decide.

Compare the full package

Write down each part separately:

  • Fixed annual pay and pay schedule
  • Variable pay, its conditions, and when it is paid
  • Equity type, vesting schedule, exercise cost, and liquidity conditions
  • Benefits, location, work arrangement, and expected hours
  • Team, responsibilities, manager, and opportunities to learn

Do not add uncertain bonus or equity values to fixed pay when you compare offers. Ask the recruiter to clarify any term that is missing from the written offer.

Check the employment terms

Review the start date, probation period, notice period, bond or repayment terms, relocation requirements, and any restrictions. If a clause is unclear or consequential, ask a qualified adviser before signing.

For an internship, confirm the stipend, duration, work expectations, and whether the company has a defined conversion process. Treat conversion as uncertain unless the written terms say otherwise.

Negotiate respectfully

Decide your preferred outcome and minimum acceptable terms before the conversation. Explain your request using the role, scope, and any competing offer you can honestly document. Ask whether the company has flexibility, and give yourself time to consider the response.

Do not invent competing offers or accept a deadline you cannot meet. A company may say no, and that does not make the offer comparison complete until you assess your own needs.

Check the start date

Confirm that the start date works with your graduation requirements. Raise any conflict early, and get an agreed date in writing.

Keep your own priorities visible

There is no single salary split or package that fits every graduate. Compare the written terms with your budget, location, role goals, and alternatives.
