Prepare for company values questions
Research official company guidance and connect it to real examples from your experience.
Values are a way to understand what a company says it prioritizes. They are not a magic list of keywords to repeat. Read the current job description and the company’s official careers pages, then prepare examples that genuinely show how you work.
A research method
- Read the role description and note the behaviors it names.
- Find the company’s current careers or culture page. Prefer official sources over interview rumor lists.
- Pick two or three themes that match the role, such as customer impact, learning, ownership, or collaboration.
- Prepare one true story for each theme. Do not bend a story to fit a principle it does not show.
- Check the page again before your interview. Company guidance and hiring processes can change.
Examples from official pages
| Company | What its official page says | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Google’s current guide to structured interviews recommends tangible, role-specific attributes instead of vague “culture fit.” It names initiative, cross-team collaboration, and self-development as examples for individual contributors. It does not set a fixed public “Googleyness” checklist. | Prepare examples of initiative, collaboration, and learning. Use the role’s own description as your guide. | Amazon | Amazon says its Leadership Principles guide daily work, including customer focus, ownership, earning trust, learning, and disagreeing respectfully before committing to a decision. | Review the official principles. Choose specific examples that show your choices and results; do not just recite principle names. Amazon Leadership Principles |
| Microsoft | Microsoft Careers describes interview themes including growth mindset, inclusion, collaboration across “One Microsoft,” customer empathy, respect, integrity, and accountability. Its tips recommend preparing specific examples and reflecting on learning. | Prepare an example of learning, working across differences, or incorporating a customer need. Microsoft interview tips |
| Meta | Meta’s 2026 proxy statement lists six company values: Move Fast, Focus on Long-Term Impact, Build Awesome Things, Live in the Future, Be Direct and Respect Your Colleagues, and Meta, Metamates, Me. Its software-engineering interview guide says recruiters provide the specific round count and preparation focus. | Connect a real example to the role. These are public company statements, not promises about the exact questions or scoring used by a particular team. Job-specific expectations may differ. Use the current role posting and recruiter instructions first.
“Googliness” without the jargon
Do not try to guess a personality type. In a useful answer, show how you learn, work with people, respond to uncertainty, and consider users. Give a real example and explain your choices. The same approach works even when the interviewer uses a different name for the behavior.
Avoid these traps
- Do not name-drop principles without an example.
- Do not claim a company has one fixed interview rubric unless its official guidance says so.
- Do not pretend every value is equally relevant to every role.
- Do not repeat confidential interview questions or private company information.
