Find and apply for suitable roles
A practical off-campus search plan for internships and graduate backend roles.
Start looking before you feel fully ready, but apply only when the role fits your eligibility. Track where you found each role, what you submitted, and what happened next. Use the referral guide when you have a relevant contact.
Build a focused search
Job requirements vary. Treat the JD sample as a dated snapshot, then check current postings before changing your stack or project plan.
Choose roles that fit
Prioritize internships and graduate roles that accept your graduation year and work history. Apply to roles in the languages and areas you can discuss. If a role asks for a different stack, decide whether the gap is small enough to address honestly.
Do not use a fixed internship-to-full-time ratio. The right mix depends on available roles, conversion terms, finances, and your preferences. Ask about role expectations and conversion before accepting an internship.
Tailor each application
Use the job description to choose which project evidence to show. Put the closest matching project near the top of your resume. State what you built, how you tested it, and the measured result. Keep claims specific and true.
Apply promptly when a suitable opening appears, but do not sacrifice accuracy for an arbitrary deadline. Follow the application instructions and save a copy of the submitted materials.
Use referrals respectfully
Ask someone close to the role or team when possible. Mention the job link and one concrete reason your experience matches. If they do not reply, follow up once after a reasonable interval and move on.
Review the funnel
Once a month, review applications by role type and stage. If you get no responses, check role fit, eligibility, resume clarity, and whether your projects demonstrate the required skills. If you reach interviews but do not progress, use the feedback and mock notes to choose what to practise.
Keep eligibility accurate
Represent your graduation date and experience truthfully. Do not apply to a role that clearly excludes your situation unless the employer says you can still be considered.
Do and don't
- Apply to roles you would consider accepting
- Match resume evidence to the specific job description
- Keep a record of outcomes and follow-ups
- Ask clear questions about internship terms and conversion
